An Exercise in Light + Shadow

Hatching (hachure in French) is an artistic technique used to create tonal or shading effects by drawing (or painting or scribing) closely spaced parallel lines

The first couple of weeks in my Perspective and Rendering class have been devoted to learning all about contour drawings, hatching, vanishing points, and developing our rendering techniques.

One of our first homework assignments we were asked to draw the same image twice. A contour drawing (on the left) to a shaded render (on the right)

A contour drawing is an artistic technique by drawing lines, that result in a drawing that is essentially an outline; the French word contour meaning, "outline".

Another drawing technique is rendering. This usually means that the artist applies graphite to the surface and then removes some of it to create lighter values and highlights, adding color, shading, and texturing to an image.

I’ve always been able to capture a life drawing pretty well, looking at an image, object, or landscape in front of me and re-creating it on paper in a multitude of mediums. So I knew going into this class that drawing was going to be no problem, what I didn’t realize is that my drawings had been lacking curiosity and thought. Though I always thrived in Art Classes, and ended up majoring in graphic design in college I paid no attention to particular drawing techniques which clearly bring reason to how fine artists and interior design renders get to be the masterpieces they are.

I am loving this class, and learning so much that I know I will take away as hard and fast skills in my career as an interior designer!
